History

Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT) was originally established on March 15th 1956 with the approval of the State Council of China. On March 1956, the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Geology jointly issued a document, that Chengdu Institute of Geological Exploration be founded by transferring partial faculty and staff from Chongqing University, Northwest University, Nanjing University, Beijing Institute of Geology and Northeast Institute of Geology. In the autumn of the same year, Chengdu Institute of Geological Exploration started to enroll undergraduate students.

After its establishment, Chengdu Institute of Geological Exploration took in part of the second section and the whole third section of the Petroleum Department of the former Beijing Institute of Geology. It was renamed Chengdu Institute of Geology in 1958, and started to enroll graduate students in 1960. The Institute was authorized to grant master's degree in 1981 after the nation resumed academic degree system and was authorized to grant doctor's degree in 1984. In 1993, Chengdu Institute of Geology was renamed Chengdu Institute of Technology. In 2001, approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT) was formed by merging Sichuan Commercial College and Chengdu Non-ferrous Metal Geological Workers College. CDUT had been under the administration of the Ministry of Geology, the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources, and the Ministry of Land and Resources respectively by 2000. In 2000, it became a provincial key university co-constructed by the central and local governments, mainly administrated by Sichuan Provincial People’s Government. On November 3rd 2010, the Ministry of Land and Resources and Sichuan Provincial People’s Government signed an agreement on co-construction of Chengdu University of Technology. In September 2017, CDUT was listed as one of the universities for the national initiative of "World-Class Disciplines" construction.
