Introduction

Located in Guilin, the world famous scenic historical city, Guilin University of Electronic Technology named as GUET for short was founded in 1960, and jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, as well as by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. GUET is also one of the nominated universities of “National Basic Ability Construction Project for Western and Central China” and has been named one of the first “National Civilized Campuses.”

As one of the four universities of electronic science and technology in China, GUET was founded in 1960. It was established as the Guilin Institute of Electronic Technology in 1980 upon approval by the State Council and was renamed Guilin University of Electronic Technology in 2006. GUET was formerly affiliated with the Fourth Ministry of Machine Building, the Ministry of Electronics Industry, the Ministry of Machinery and Electronics Industry, the China Electronics Corporation, and the Ministry of Information Industry. In 2000, its administrative management was transferred to a system of joint establishment by the central and local governments, with local management taking the lead. In 1990, Comrade Jiang Zemin, then General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, visited GUET and personally inscribed the motto: “Cultivate more qualified talents for the development of the electronics industry.”

Facilities and Conditions

GUET currently has four campuses: Jinjiling Campus, Liuhe Road Campus, Huajiang Campus, and Beihai Campus. They are located in the Guilin National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, the Yaoshan Scenic Area of Guilin, and the Yinhai District of Beihai, respectively, covering a total area of over 4,700 mu (approx. 313 hectares). GUET has also established the GUET Nanning Research Institute in Nanning. The library covers a construction area of over 45,000 square meters, housing over 2.4465 million printed books, over 2.069 million e-books, 78 Chinese and foreign databases, and over 554,000 Chinese and foreign electronic journals. It is equipped with an advanced network information platform and a smart campus platform.

Academic Discipline & Speciality

GUET offers 76 bachelor programs including 23 national first-class programs, 20 programs have passed the certification of China Engineering Education Accreditation Association (including 1 accredited by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development) and 5 national characteristic programs. GUET currently has 25 national first-class undergraduate courses, 1 national curriculum ideology and politics demonstration course, and a total of 7 national excellent courses, national bilingual teaching demonstration courses, national excellent resource-sharing courses, and national excellent online open courses. GUET has produced 9 textbooks included in the “11th Five-Year Plan” and “12th Five-Year Plan” for national planning. GUET has won 8 national teaching achievement awards in higher education. GUET has 21 master’s programs as well as 12 professional master’s programs. GUET also has 8 doctoral programs and 4 postdoctoral research centers. GUET is a university authorized to recommend outstanding undergraduates for exemption from the admission exam for postgraduate studies. GUET excels in academic research with Engineering, Material Science, Computer Science, Chemistry as well as Environment and Ecology disciplines ranking among the top 1% in the ESL (Essential Science Indicators) Global.

Faculty

GUET has over 3,400 faculty and staff members. Among the teaching staff, 972 hold senior professional and technical titles. There are 20 person-times of national-level talents and 175 person-times of provincial and ministerial-level talents. GUET boasts 1 National Huang Danian-style Teacher Team from the Ministry of Education (MOE), 1 of the MOE’s first virtual teaching and research section construction pilots, 5 Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region university Huang Danian-style teacher teams, 5 Guangxi talent highlands, and 7 Guangxi innovation teams.

Talent Cultivation

GUET has over 41,000 full-time students. It is an MOE Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan university, an implementing university for the National College Students' Innovative Experiment Plan, an MOE demonstration site for College English teaching reform, and a training unit for preparatory classes for children of border defense military personnel. It has been selected as one of the first demonstration schools for the “Three-wide Education” comprehensive reform in Guangxi universities. GUET hosts 1 national talent cultivation model innovation experimental zone, 5 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 typical case of a national experimental teaching demonstration center, 2 national engineering practice teaching centers, and 1 national off-campus practice education base for college students. It also has 2 “Xiaoping Science and Technology Innovation Teams” for national college students, 1 professional studio support unit of the National School Communist Youth League New Media Operation Center, and 1 college student network culture studio of the MOE. As one of the first national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, GUET was selected as one of the first national innovation and entrepreneurship education practice base construction units. GUET’s student innovation practice base was named a “National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Demonstration Base” by the Communist Youth League Central Committee and the All-China Youth Federation. GUET was rated as an “Advanced Unit in the Implementation of the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Plan for 2012-2014.” Students have repeatedly achieved excellent results in competitions such as the China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National Undergraduate Electronics Design Contest, the “Challenge Cup” National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, the National Undergraduate Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, and the National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling. They have won gold awards in the China “Internet+” Competition, and the highest honors—the “Sony Cup” and “TI Cup”—in the National Undergraduate Electronics Design Contest. In the 2025 National Undergraduate Electronics Design Contest, GUET ranked first in the country in both the number of first prizes and the total number of awards. GUET ranks 44th nationally in the eighth round of the national college student competition rankings for ordinary universities.

Scientific Research

GUET has undertaken a number of high-level national research projects, including major projects from the National Science and Technology Major Project, the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) for the development of major scientific instruments, key projects, joint fund key support projects, international (regional) cooperation and exchange projects, NSFC general programs, and special commissioned projects from the National Social Science Fund. Since the “14th Five-Year Plan,” it has added 417 national-level research projects, including 24 national-level key major projects. GUET has received a total of 68 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards, as well as science and technology awards of the same level established by social forces. GUET is home to 1 national engineering research center, 2 MOE key laboratories, 1 MOE engineering research center, 1 MOE international cooperation joint laboratory, 3 Guangxi major scientific and technological innovation bases, 12 Guangxi key laboratories, 1 Guangxi applied mathematics center, 1 Guangxi scientific and technological innovation cooperation base, 3 Guangxi scientific and technological achievement transformation pilot research bases, 1 Guangxi concept verification center, 9 Guangxi engineering (technology) research centers, 5 Guangxi collaborative innovation centers, 4 Guangxi university engineering research centers, 1 Guangxi transportation industry key laboratory, and 2 Guangxi humanities and social science research bases. GUET took the lead in establishing the Guangxi Artificial Intelligence College and the Guangxi Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Its university science park was approved as a national university science park, and its maker space was approved as a “National Maker space.” GUET was selected as one of the first batch of university science and technology achievement transformation and technology transfer bases by the MOE, and was approved as a national intellectual property pilot university and a university national intellectual property information service center. GUET continues to advance the construction of industry-university-research platforms such as the Huajiang Smart Valley Electronic Information Entrepreneurship Industrial Park and the Shenzhen GUET Electronic Information and Advanced Manufacturing Technology Research Institute. GUET vigorously promotes the construction of the GUET Nanning Research Institute, contributing “GUET Strength” to the construction of a magnificent Guangxi in the new era.

International Exchange

GUET has established good cooperative relationships with over 100 universities and academic institutions in countries along the “Belt and Road,” as well as in Asia, Europe, the Americas, Oceania, and Africa. Every year, GUET selects and sponsors outstanding young teachers and students to go abroad for academic visiting or further study at overseas universities, and it has long been recruiting international students. GUET is an accepting and training unit for the “Chinese Government Scholarship”, “Silk Road Scholarship”, “Guangxi ASEAN Government Scholarship” and “International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship”. GUET is the university of Higher General Education Accreditation for International Students in China. GUET currently has 1 Sino-foreign cooperative education institution, Guilin University of Electronic Technology Clermont School of Intelligent Finance, and 2 Sino-foreign cooperative undergraduate programs, including one with Berkeley College, USA. GUET has one Confucius Institute jointly established with the National University of Battambang in Cambodia.
